How to use User state Migrating Tool (USMT)

The  User State Migrating Tool (USMT) helps users and Information Technology (IT) professionals transfer the user's files and settings to a new computer running Windows XP Professional or to a new installation of Windows XP Professional on an existing computer.You can use the USMT to transfer the user state from a computer running windows 95 or later to a computer running windows xp professional.Using this User state Migrating Tool(USMT) you can easily reduce your work on modifying user files and settings.

Following setting, folders and files are transferred by default in user state migrating tool (USMT) :

Settings transferred by default :

Accessibility Options, Browsers and mail settings, Display properties, Folder and Taskbar Options, Fonts, Mouse and keyboard options,network Printers and mapped Network Drivers,Regional settings,Microsoft Office,Microsoft Excel,Microsoft Outlook,Microsoft Word,Microsoft Power Point,Stored Mail and Contacts

Folders transferred by defaults :

My Documents,My Pictures,Desktop,Favourites

Files types transferred by default :

*.ch3 *.csv *.dif *.doc *.dot *.dqy *.iqy *.mcw *.oqy *.pot *.ppa *.pps *.ppt *.pre *.rqy *.rtf *.scd *.sh3 *.txt *.wpd *.wps *.wql *.wri *.xls

To use User State Migrating Tool(USMT) follow this :

Copy the migrating user files and settings

Go to Start >> all programs >> accessories >> system tools >> Files and settings transfer wizard. A screen will appear below this

Now click next

From here Choose "Old computer" and click next

Now choose where to save and click next twice and finish

Go to Start >> all programs >> accessories >> system tools >> Files and settings transfer wizard.

Locate USMT save file
From here locate the save file and click next and finish the process.
